Wales Cancer Research Centre PPI team strengthen community links at 2025 MEC Health Fair

On 29 October representatives from the Wales Cancer Research Centre (WCRC) took part in the Minority Ethnic Communities (MEC) Health Fair 2025, connecting with local communities to promote diversity and inclusion in cancer research.

The fair, organised by the Cardiff Third Sector Council (C3SC), brought together community members, local organisations, and health providers to share information and celebrate the wide range of health initiatives taking place across the city. The theme for this year’s event – “Celebrating Diversity in Health Care” – highlighted the importance of ensuring that all communities have access to inclusive, culturally sensitive health services and opportunities to shape research.

WCRC’s Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) Research Partners, Dr Sally Anstey, Bob McAlister, and Dr Kathy Seddon, attended the fair to share information about the Centre’s work and the vital role of patient and public voices in research.

“Our aim is to ensure that everyone’s voice is heard in cancer research, engaging with diverse communities helps us design research that reflects the needs and experiences of all people affected by cancer.” Sally Anstey

Throughout the day, the WCRC team met with attendees to discuss how they can get involved in research through the Centre’s PPI group, which works alongside scientists and clinicians to shape studies, improve communication, and ensure that research outcomes are meaningful for patients and families.

“We’re particularly keen to diversify our PPI membership,” added Bob McAlister. “By involving people from a wider range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds, we can make sure that cancer research in Wales truly represents the communities it serves.”

The event provided a valuable platform for collaboration, networking, and shared learning between communities and health organisations, reinforcing the collective effort to make healthcare and research in Wales more inclusive.
