WCRC team attends Cross-Party Group on Medical Research at the Senedd

(L-R) WCRC Researchers Dr Mat Clement, Dr Michelle Edwards, Dr Alex Gibbs, Communications and Engagement Officer Sarah Hughes and Lead Lay Research Partner Julie Hepburn.

On Wednesday 3 July members of the Wales Cancer Research Centre attended the Cross-Party Group (CPG) on Medical Research event at the Senedd, designed to showcase medical research in Wales. The event featured around 25 research organisations and institutions, emphasising the crucial role of medical research in enhancing the Welsh economy and healthcare sector.

Chaired by Russell George MS (Conservative), the CPG has been a vital advocate for medical research since its establishment in November 2018. The group, which includes Members of the Senedd (MSs) from various political parties, third sector representatives, industry professionals, patients, and clinicians, aims to improve the medical research environment in Wales.

The day was well-attended and featured key speakers such as CPG chair Russell George MS and Deputy Presiding Officer David Rees MS. The WCRC team had the chance to network, enjoy lunch, and engage with MSs and their staff to discuss the impact of their research and key ongoing projects.

Dr Mat Clement who attended the event as part of the WCRC team said:

“Attending the CPG at the Senedd was a really nice way of interacting with the other healthcare professions and professionals from within Wales. Furthermore I was enthused to see interest from members of the Senedd who were circulating at the various stands and taking time to talk to the presenters. I didn’t find these interactions were rushed or forced and found the members I interacted with interested in finding out more about me, my profession and why this makes a difference in Wales and beyond.”

The CPG was a direct outcome of the recommendations from a report in November 2023. This report detailed the benefits of medical research for the people of Wales and offered several key recommendations, such as improving access to clinical trials, prioritising research as an economic driver by supporting universities and encouraging collaboration, and integrating research into workforce planning. The report also stressed the importance of promoting and sharing ongoing medical research across Wales.

This event showcased the wide range of research happening in Wales and underscored the importance of collaboration in pushing the medical research agenda forward, with tangible benefits for the health and wellbeing of the Welsh population.
